Every year, apart from this one, there has been a local run in my city called the Great North Run.
It’s 13.1 miles through Newcastle, ending up in South Shields.
Every year, apart from this one, I go to the starting line, on the observers side of the fence, to watch the run start. There are loads of spectators that are family and friends of people who are running the half marathon, and the atmosphere is wonderful.

There are always celebrities mulling around, either warming up for the run itself, watching or starting the race.
A couple of years ago, Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs was starting the race. I noticed him standing on a podium as the masses of thousands ran passed him, and after about 30-40 minutes of runners over the starting line, he left the caged area and was walking away from the event.
This was my chance.
I ran over to him, asked for a photo 👆🏻 and left!
He was very kind and friendly but it was a short and sweet stop of “hello” / “goodbye”!
He didn’t stop for a conversation with me, and if I had stopped for a conversation, I would have predicted a riot…
